After graduating from Palmetto High School Doug Atkins attended East Tennessee State University on a football scholarship. In 1976, he earned a Master’s and Education Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision from Clemson University. In 2001, he earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from South Carolina State University. In 1973, Doug began his career as a Science Teacher, Physical Education Teacher, and an Assistant Football Coach and Head Track and Weightlifting Coach at Belton-Honea Path High School, and 1980-81 served as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at BHP. In 1982, Dr. Atkins began at Palmetto Middle School as the assistant principal. In 1988, he became assistant principal at Palmetto High School. In 1990, he was named principal at Palmetto High School. In 1998, Doug was named South Carolina Counseling Association State Administrator of the Year. In 2006, Dr. Atkins was elected as a Board Member for Anderson One and on December 1, 2012 was elected as the South Carolina School Board's Association Region 11 Director. Dr. Atkins is currently retired from the State of South Carolina in 2001 and retired from the State of Georgia in 2011. He works part time for the Mountain Education Charter High School. "I want to serve on the school board and contribute back to a community that has been so gracious to me over the years." Doug and his wife Rita have one son and three grandsons.
