Hello and welcome to our class!  I am very excited about this school year, and I can’t wait to start learning with you.  Here is a little information about me so you know who I am:

I am originally from Louisiana, and, yes, I love crawfish.  In 2006, I graduated summa cum laude from the University of New Orleans with my Bachelor’s in Secondary Mathematics Education.  I moved to Florida that summer, where I taught high school mathematics for 10 years, 6 at a local high school and 4 in the virtual setting where I also served as a departmental leader.  I obtained a Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of North Florida in 2010, and I earned a Doctorate of Education in Curriculum, Teaching, and Teacher Education from the University of Florida in 2017.  This is my 14th year teaching math and my 4th year teaching in South Carolina.  I taught at TL Hanna High School in Anderson, SC, for the 2016-2017 school year prior to coming to Powdersville High School.  I am married, and I have three children.  During my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my family, cooking, and doing arts and crafts.

It is my sincere desire for my students to be successful.  If you ever have any comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I look forward to working with you!

Important information for students and parents:

    • Power School Parent Portal - Grades are updated in Power School as frequently as possible (once a week minimum). Please check Power School grades regularly so you are informed. Power School can also be accessed through the ASD1 website.  Grades will be weighted in the following manner:
      • Major Grades (60% - tests and major projects-3-4 per quarter)
      • Minor Grades (40% - daily grades, quizzes, and minor projects)
    • Google Classroom - Google Classroom will be utilized for class announcements (including homework assignments), additional resources, and electronic assignments.  Students will join Google Classroom using the class code, and parents can be added via email.  Parents who desire access to Google Classroom are encouraged to email Dr. Van Buren at vanburenj@apps.anderson1.net.
    • Make-up Policy - All make-up work is due the following class period. Students are responsible for getting the assignments when they are absent, and all homework is posted in Google Classroom. If a student is absent for an extended period of time due to illness, please email Dr. Van Buren to make arrangements for making up work. Tests and quizzes should be made up within one week if absent.  Students with pre-excused absences, such as field trips, should plan ahead and obtain assignments that they will miss prior to their departure.
