Welcome to 8th Grade South Carolina History!
My name is Lisa McMahon, and I am very pleased to be at Powdersville Middle School. After traveling a circuitous path, this is my second year in the classroom. After graduating from Clemson University with degrees in History & Fine Arts, I then went to graduate school at The University of Georgia in Historic Preservation. I continued my love of school by completing a craftsman certification program in restoration from City & Guilds of London. My love of history and hands-on, scaffold-climbing work kept me busy for many years until it became clear teaching had truly always been my calling. I returned to Clemson and completed my MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching), certifying in Middle Grades: Social Studies and English/Language Arts.
Saying that I am a voracious reader would be an understatement. Books are the catalyst for acquiring knowledge, traveling to unknown places, meeting outrageous and intriguing individuals, and so much more. We’re going to be visiting many of these ideas this year throughout South Carolina's wild and woolly past from initial settlements to modern times. Equally as important as reading and studying history is the ability to communicate it . . . whether it be in the written or spoken form. We will combine these vital skills in our South Carolina History class. My goal is to encourage each student to become a conscientious citizen; understanding how our state has contributed to the development of the United States (and world) is an important first step in this process.
When hiking through the North Carolina mountains, working in the yard, or lounging in the hammock, a book usually isn’t too far away. My kids (Brinkley and Lily) are my joy and keep me thoroughly entertained, as well as our two cats, one dog, and 12 fish. You can also sign up to receive E-mail Alerts to notify you when content has been changed on this webpage.
