• What is PBIS?

    PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. This system is an effort to create a positive school community with consistent expectations in all areas of the school. From the hallways to the playground, from the cafeteria to the restrooms, PBIS helps HMES students understand what is expected of them and provides motivation to comply with those expectations.
    Many schools using PBIS use their mascot to promote the rules and expectations of the school. At the time, HMES did not have a clear identification with a mascot, so the PBIS team decided to use something much more familiar to our students- SHINE ON.

    PBIS operates using a matrix of expectations. Here is the matrix developed by the HMES PBIS team specifically for HMES students that incorporates the ideals of "Shine On":

    Model the 10 minute no talking rule during lunch.

    Decide rules before starting games.

    Cooperate with your bathroom monitor.

    Avoid all-calls.


    Classrooms earn recognition in the form of Shiners when they display behavior on the PBIS matrix. With assistance from the classroom teacher, students decide how many Shiners their class needs to earn in order to receive a reward. The beauty of Shiners is that teachers cannot give their own classrooms Shiners. Instead, other staff members must notice the Shine On behavior and reward the classroom with a Shiner. All staff members (administrators, teachers, assistants, front office staff, cafeteria employees, and custodians) have Shiners to give to classrooms, so students constantly have the opportunity to earn Shiners as they move about the building throughout the day.
    Students who do not comply with behaviors in the matrix will have consequences as stated by the individual classroom teacher's behavior management plan.
    Where Do We Go From Here?
    Developing a PBIS program for a school is a three year process. So, while we have made strides towards implementing PBIS at HMES, we have goals for continuing our implementation. Our primary goal and next step is to create a behavior management system for individuals that includes both incentives and consequences for individual behavior. The challenege for our PBIS team is to create expectations that are consistent for all students yet are developmentally appropriate for all ages attending HMES.
             Your PBIS Team
    The PBIS team at HMES is comprised of volunteers who heard about the program and became excited by its possibilities and promises. The team attended a three day training session in the summer and meets at least once a month to review data and determine if our program is working for our students. This team will be headed back to Columbia this summer for more training and to take a hard look at what we have done this year and where we need to go during the next.
